“We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness.”

“We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness.” Alcoholics Anonymous (1939) · Chapter 6 · Into Action
Where it comes from

The first of the Promises in Chapter 6 — the list of what begins arriving before the amends are even half done.

Today’s reflection

Fitting for the Fourth: the freedom promised here isn’t freedom to do anything — we had that, and it nearly killed us. It’s freedom from. From the obsession, the hiding, the morning inventory of damage. Independence Day for an alcoholic isn’t the day all the rules disappeared; it’s the day the dictator did. Celebrate accordingly. And if today’s parties are hard, find a meeting — many groups run extra ones on holidays for exactly this reason.

What is the difference between sober living and rehab?
Rehab provides intensive clinical treatment including therapy, medical care, and detox services, typically lasting 30-90 days. Sober living homes are transitional residences providing structured, substance-free environments focusing on real-world reintegration while maintaining sobriety with peer support.
How long do people stay in sober living homes?
The average stay is 3-6 months, though many residents stay 6-12 months or longer. Research shows longer stays (90+ days) significantly improve long-term recovery outcomes.
What should I look for when choosing a sober living home?
Key factors include: house rules and structure that match your needs, regular drug testing policies, location near Albany support groups and employment, qualified staff, positive peer community, clear pricing with no hidden fees, and NARR certifications.
How do I find the right recovery program in Albany?
Consider the type of treatment needed (detox, inpatient, outpatient, sober living), insurance coverage, location preferences, and specialized programs. Browse directory listings in Albany and call providers to confirm current availability, services, and payment options.
Do facilities in Albany accept insurance?
Many treatment centers and detox facilities in Albany accept major insurance plans including Medicaid, Medicare, Blue Cross, Aetna, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare. Sober living homes typically require private pay but some partner with treatment centers for covered clinical components.
